Campaign structure for creative testing in META

Here is my approach to testing creatives.

The process. I try to ship new creatives on a schedule — once a week, on Mondays. The editors have a KPI: N varied creatives per week. The goal of testing is a steadily falling CPA, meaning the price of a purchase in the campaign.

Step 1. Testing creatives. At this stage what matters is that the new creatives get traffic at all.

  • Campaign: Manual budget
  • Name: “Large Campaign” — a template that every test ad set goes into
  • Optimisation: usually Purchases, sometimes Trials
  • Ad set with new creatives: 5 creatives
  • Test budget: 5×CPA (if CPA is $30, the budget is $150)

Once the ad set has spent its budget I switch it off. The winner is decided simply: cost per purchase at or below KPI.

Step 2. Launching the live campaign.

If the test ad set with the new creatives lands inside the KPI, I

  • duplicate the campaign with all its ad sets
  • switch off the weak ones and keep the good ones
  • move it to Campaign Budget Optimization if needed
  • or leave it on manual with automated rules / birch

Where it helps I add a Cost Cap / Bid Cap limit (works well together with CBO).

Housekeeping. When the test “Large Campaign” accumulates too many ad sets, I delete the ones that went far past KPI. It speeds up duplication and keeps the structure clean.

Andromeda. My method is not canonical by META's own guides. As I understand it, at step two META advises assembling a single ad set out of the many test winners. In practice it works better for me to duplicate the whole campaign, copying ad sets that already carry data.

Questions. What if a week goes by without a winner? → I simply delete that ad set from the large campaign.

Why manual budget and not CBO right away? → If you launch several ad sets, META concentrates on past winners and the new creatives get no traffic.

Why not add creatives gradually to the live campaign? → Same reason: new ads get almost no impressions.

How do you arrive at 5×CPA? → I look at past LTV data for paying users and take as KPI the point where the revenue curve flattens out.

How exactly do you duplicate the live campaign? → I move the whole structure, not just the winning ad sets.
